I began thinking about this project by reflecting back on the projects I have most enjoyed during this degree.
My Unit X project from second year came to mind, it consisted of a series of six GIFs based on Sylvia Plath's poem 'Lady Lazarus', and is one of the projects I am most proud of. I enjoyed exploring a darker subject matter, and always like the opportunity to develop my skills with moving image.
I also particularly enjoyed the animation I created in the summer between second and third year based on a BBC Sounds conversation between a husband and wife about growing old and end of life.
Based on these projects I know that I would like to create something that is moving image, either an animation or GIFs. I also would like to work with some kind of narrative, whether this be a story, a poem or even a conversation.
I am also interested in the topics that I have focused on for contextualising practise influencing this project. For my essays in second and third year I investigated Gothic literature; in second year focusing on the haunted house as a chronotope and in third year looking at symbolism in Bram Stoker's 'Dracula'.
These darker narratives are ones that I find intriguing and would like to explore more for my project in Unit X.
