Edward Gorey (1925-2000) was an American author and artist. Known for his Gothic style, Gorey's work was typically black and white and centred around darker themes. His work was published in many books, his own and ones written by other people. For example , the first image on this page is from 'The Ghastlycrumb Tinies', a dark children's book that goes through a retelling of the alphabet through 26 children's names and the ghastly ways they met their demise.
Gorey is one of my favourite artists and his work has been an influence on the style of illustration that I would like to try and pursue in my own practise.
Also in relation to this project I was interested to see how he handled combining text and image through captions, this is something that I'm considering incorporating into my animation to further link the words of the poem to the animation I am creating.
