It feels like this project has had me looking to the past for a lot of my inspiration, even though I am creating my final outcome in a very contemporary way, and this runs true for some of the artwork I have been looking at. Paintings of ghosts and trying to visualise strange occurrences is not a new thing, apparitions have been depicted in various ways throughout time.
In my research I was most interested in some of the pieces from the late 19th and early 20th century, that have been called "Dark Romanticism". I really like the colours used in the pieces and it runs a similar theme through the artworks below. I also find it interesting the way a kind of ethereal light has being captured in the works highlighting the supernatural elements of the pieces.
Below are the pieces that stood out to me most:

"Verso la Luce" (1910) by Cipriano Mannucci (1882 - 1970)

"Le Visionnaire" (1904), Serafino Macchiati (1861 - 1916)

"Regret" (Date Unknown), Luděk Marold (1865 - 1898)

"The Silent Voice" (1892-93), Gerald Edward Moira (1867 - 1959)

"Tamara and Demon" (1889), Kontantin Makovsky (1839 - 1915)
